Outgoing President Ralph Ayers congratulates incoming President Tom Plumb with the passing of the presidential horseshoe at the annual meeting of the Port Isabel Rotary Club on June 30.
The Club ended a very successful year on June 30. Over the past year, the club awarded four $1,000.00 scholarships, provided dictionaries to 3rd grade Derry Elementary School students for the sixth year in a row, equipped a clinic in Monterey, Mexico, provided a school bus to a village near Monterey, sponsored work crews that went to Honduras to build 6 classrooms, a 36,000 water storage tank and new dam for a community of 11,000 people, reforested a watershed, provided power to four communities built and/or repaired latrines at five schools, and provided 150 computers complete with teacher training to Trujillo area teachers, assisted with Hurricane Dolly clean-up, recognized students of the month, raised flags around Port Isabel and South Padre Island on national holidays, sent two students to the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy in Corpus Christi, and much more.
Plumb's goals include providing an air conditioning system for an orphanage in Matamoras, building 11 more classrooms and two community water filtration systems in Trujillo, Honduras, start an Earlyact program (an elementary school version of Rotary), provide a $23,000.00 Ambassadorial Scholarship to a local university student, as well as continue with ongoing efforts.
